I slipped into an unconscious world of pain and blood.

The streets around me were drenched in gore as I searched for refuge in the wreckage of the village. I barely registered the destruction of the houses and the bodies of the people who had cared for me in my few, short years.

Screams grew louder, and I knew the few men standing wouldn’t be alive for much longer. There were no wielders, the King didn’t think they would be needed against a handful of farmers and peasants. He was right.

There was no organized attack, no military precision. Just chaos and noise and stench. Too fast and too strong for me to do anything other than hide, breathless and trembling. I half-expected the noises of a massacre to be metallic, but what I heard the most was the swoosh of sword against flesh and the never-ending dripping of blood.

Until silence started to fill the air and I became unable to move. That was the first time I knew the paralyzing fear of death. Soldiers started to turn against the few women and children hiding. No light nor humanity in their faces. Just numbness disguised as a lingering desire for death and a rising thirst for pleasure.

It wasn’t long until one of the soldiers marked me. Our gazes locked and over what felt like an eternity he peered at my bloodied arms, taking in the small body behind the ragged clothes, assessing how much he would enjoy it – me.

The wolfish smile that pulled at his lips spurred me into action. I didn’t know how to use my power and there was no calming my mind to keep it hidden, so I willed myself to run, leaving a trail of uncontrolled shadows in my wake. He chased harder, the want on his face replaced by rage.

I crashed against broad shoulders and strong arms, darkness uncontrolled around me, enveloping both of us.

Except, this time, when I looked up, I didn’t see the face I’d seen twenty years before; it wasn’t Ivo’s slick hair and triumphant smile facing me. For once, I didn’t relive the moment in which he saved my life and gained control over my soul.

This time, I saw the face I’d come to admire. I saw shiny armor with Niram’s fiery crown stained in blood. I saw Aiden, holding me tightly and ominously as he said, “Guards,” right before I jolted, suddenly awake.
